Everyone’s getting divorced these days, so where’s the hope for the rest of us?

It seems like every week we hear about yet another celebrity couple calling it quits, and honestly, it can be a bit disheartening. From TikTok influencers like Khalid and Salama parting ways to high-profile Hollywood couples like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez (again!), it’s easy to wonder if love even stands a chance. Add in scandals like Robert Morris or Josh Duggar, and you may find yourself side-eyeing marriage altogether. Is there really hope for us normal people?

Why Celebrity Splits Hit Harder

When we see public figures like Israel Houghton, a gospel singer whose first marriage ended in scandal, it makes us question how well we really know anyone. After all, these are people who have seemingly endless resources — therapists, counselors, money, and time — yet they still struggle to maintain their relationships. It forces us to reflect on our own romantic expectations and question if lasting love is even possible.

The cycle of celebrity breakups may make it seem like love is doomed to fail, but here’s a thought: maybe we should stop holding them to unrealistic standards. Just because they’re famous doesn’t mean their relationships don’t go through the same trials and tribulations as the rest of us. In fact, theirs might be harder to maintain under the constant scrutiny. But here’s the thing: God takes marriage seriously, and He calls us to do the same.

Why We Should Take Marriage Seriously

In Ephesians 5:31-32, the Bible says, “For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This passage highlights the sacredness of marriage, something that transcends romantic feelings. God intended marriage to reflect His unwavering commitment to us, and as such, we should treat it as a covenant, not just a contract.

Unfortunately, it feels like today’s culture — especially in the world of fame and fortune — tends to throw marriage away when things get hard. Yet, as followers of Christ, we are called to fight for our relationships. Satan is actively attacking marriages, especially within the Christian community, because he knows the power and unity a strong marriage can have in furthering God’s kingdom.

4 Ways to Keep from Becoming Cynical About Love

1. Remember that Love is a Covenant, Not a Contract

Many celebrities see love as transactional. When things stop benefiting one party, the marriage ends. But in a Christian marriage, love is a covenant between the couple and God. Matthew 19:6 reminds us, “Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Celebrity divorces may make it seem like love is fickle, but a Christ-centered relationship is built on something much stronger than emotions.

“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure.”

2. Protect Your Marriage from Outside Influences

Hebrews 13:4 says, “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure.” With Satan working overtime to attack families and relationships, it's more important than ever to protect your marriage. In the media-heavy world we live in, constant comparisons to celebrity couples or news of infidelity and scandal can create seeds of doubt. Stay grounded in your faith and rely on God to keep your marriage strong.

3. Fight for Your Marriage, Even When It’s Hard

Just as we see couples like Ben Affleck and J. Lo struggling through very public ups and downs, we’re reminded that marriage is a constant battle. Ephesians 6:12 says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world.” The enemy wants to destroy marriages, but by constantly choosing love, you can stand against these attacks.

4. Look to Christian Role Models

While there’s plenty of drama in celebrity marriages, there are also some strong Christian couples who show us that lasting love is possible. Kirk Cameron & Chelsea Noble, Chip & Joanna Gaines, Mark Wahlberg and Rhea Durham  are just a few examples of celebrities who put God at the center of their relationship and fight to protect their marriage. These couples remind us that with faith, love, and perseverance, marriage can thrive, even in a chaotic world.

At the end of the day, celebrity divorces don’t have to taint our view of love. For every public breakup, there are strong, loving relationships happening both in and out of the spotlight. Whether you're inspired by couples like Kirk and Chelsea Cameron or by people you know personally, always remember: real love is messy, but it’s also beautiful and while the world may be full of drama, it’s still possible to find and build a lasting, fulfilling relationship.
