I think I speak for everyone when I say life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect it. Just when we think we’ve got it all figured out, we’re hit with a wrecking ball of pain, disappointment and suffering. But guess what? There's light at the end of the tunnel. You don’t have to be stuck in an endless loop of suffering, there’s still hope. Even in the darkest of times, joy can be found lurking in the shadows, waiting to be discovered.
So, how do we stay joyful when life feels like anything but that? Well, here are a few tried-and-tested tips to help you navigate through the storm!
#1 Embrace The Suck: Yes you read that right. Sometimes you just have to embrace the suckiness of the situation. This includes acknowledging your pain, disappointment and frustration. It’s okay to feel horrible sometimes. Give yourself permission to wallow for a bit, but don’t let it consume you!
#2 Find The Silver Linings: Guess what? Every situation has a silver lining. Look for the tiny glimmers of hope and positivity amidst the chaos. Be reassured that this cycle of misery is merely a season in your life. Heartfelt moments like dinner with friends and family, watching the sunrise or even just a good cup of coffee can become your safe space.
#3 Laugh In The Face Of Adversity: Laughter is the best medicine, especially during tough times. Search for humor in the craziness of life and its challenges. Watch that stand-up comedy show you’ve been eyeing for a while now, read a funny book or even joke (roast) around with a loved one. Laughter has this way of making you feel that everything will be okay.
#4 Gratitude: When life begins to feel like you're scraping the bottom of the barrel, it becomes easy to forget all the good stuff. Step back and take a moment to pause and reflect on the many things you’re grateful for, no matter how small they seem. Maybe a warm hug from your family and friends, a kind gesture from a stranger or even the fact that you’re alive and kicking!
#5 You’ve Got A Friend In Me: You’re not alone! Despite what you may think or feel when life’s got you down, you’re not in this alone. Reach out to your support system whether that be friends, family or a therapist. Share your struggles, rant about all the things that have got you frustrated and enjoy the realization that you’ve got people who care about you and love you. They’ve got your back!
#6 Live In The Moment: The past is history, the future is a mystery, but the present is a gift. Don’t spend your days worrying about what could have been, instead focus on things that bring you joy. Whether that be dancing in the rain, knitting sweaters or eating a foot-long burrito, do the things that make you happy.
In the end, finding joy in the midst of suffering is a journey, not a destination. It won’t happen overnight, and it definitely won’t be easy. But remember, you are stronger than you think, and you have the power to overcome even the darkest of days.
As a reminder that the trials you go through aren't for nothing, James 1:2-3 says "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.". So, hold onto hope, keep smiling through the tears, and never forget that joy is just around the corner, waiting to embrace you with open arms!
